Music for Bands
When composing for a band-context I make quite some use of software sequencers. I like odd melodies / rhythms (which doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the more singable stuff, too!) and sequencers are a great composing tool for that purpose. I can just drag blocks around in the midi-matrix until it sounds right - and than take a look at what I actually did later.

Solo Performance
I sometimes perform solo with guitar, effects and loops. I compose basic loops and melodies but try to keep things open when playing them live.
